📖 Luke 4:18-19 –

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to set free those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.

The Gospel of God’s Compassion

The Gospel of Luke tells the story of Jesus as the fulfilment of God’s promises, the Saviour who brings light to all people. Written by Luke, traditionally a physician and companion of Paul, and the only gentile author, this Gospel is part one of a two-volume work that continues in the book of Acts. Together they show the story of salvation stretching from Israel’s hope, through Jesus’ life and ministry, to the birth of the Church.

Luke’s account is full of life and movement: angels sing, the Spirit fills, and people rejoice. More than any other Gospel, Luke shows us a God who notices the forgotten, lifts the poor, and welcomes the outsider. It’s a Gospel where grace sits at the table, where sinners become friends, and where joy is never far from repentance.

Why Luke Matters

Luke reminds us that God’s mercy is for everyone… men and women, rich and poor, Jew and Gentile. His Gospel gives special attention to:

  • The poor and outcast – shepherds, widows, tax collectors, and sinners.
  • The Holy Spirit and prayer – the divine power guiding Jesus and the Church.
  • Joy and celebration – salvation is pictured as a feast.
  • Reversal – the mighty fall and the humble are raised up.
  • Table fellowship – Jesus’ meals reveal the kingdom’s welcome.

Luke’s message is simple but profound: God’s love has come near, and it looks like compassion.

Themes and Motifs

Throughout Luke’s Gospel, you’ll find recurring images and ideas that tie everything together:

  • Mercy – God’s heart for the lost.
  • Inclusion – outsiders becoming insiders.
  • The Spirit’s presence – empowering, guiding, renewing.
  • The journey to Jerusalem – Jesus moving steadily toward the cross.
  • Meals and stories – where the kingdom of God is revealed.
