The world feels heavy. Wars and genocide rage across the world. Violence, displacement, and loss of life have become the daily news. At home in South Africa, we wrestle with corruption, inequality, poverty, unemployment, and gender-based violence. Around the world, leaders misuse power, truth is twisted, and societies unravel under greed and fear. It feels like darkness is winning.
But Scripture shows us this is not the first time humanity has walked in shadows. In every generation, God raises prophets, men and women who speak truth to power, who cry out for justice, who call people back to the heart of God. Their voices are not comfortable; they disturb, confront, and challenge. Yet they also carry hope. The prophets remind us that God’s light cannot be overcome.
This month we will listen to Elijah, one of the great prophets, who knew both the fire of God and the silence of despair. We will walk through the words of other Prophets, who dared to imagine justice flowing and dry bones living. We will sit with Isaiah, whose message stretches from judgment to comfort to a new heaven and earth. And we will reflect on the symbol of light, shining from creation to Christ to the new Jerusalem.
In dark times, we need light. In failing systems, we need prophetic voices. This is not just about the past, it is about now. Where do we hear the prophetic word today? Where are we called to be light in the shadows?
