Monthly Overview: A Journey of Water and Spirit
This month’s readings flow like a river, from promise to fulfilment, from cleansing to calling. Through the life of John the Baptiser, the Gospel of Luke, and the symbols of water and Spirit, we trace God’s movement of renewal, in creation, in Christ, and in us.
Character: John the Baptiser – The Voice in the Wilderness
John stands at the meeting point of old and new. He’s the prophet who prepares the way, calling people to repentance and renewal through water. His baptism was a symbol of turning hearts back to God, but it pointed ahead to something greater: a baptism not only of water, but of the Holy Spirit and fire.
Through John, we see faithfulness, courage, and humility, the willingness to decrease so that Christ may increase (John 3:30).
Theme: Baptism – Washed, Called, Sent
Baptism is more than a symbol, it’s a doorway. In the waters, we see dying and rising, cleansing and commissioning. It’s the moment when God says, “You are mine.”
Through baptism we are joined to Christ, filled with the Spirit, and sent to live as signs of the kingdom, bringing mercy, justice, and peace to a thirsty world.
Book: Luke – The Good News for All
Luke’s Gospel tells the story of salvation as God’s mercy in motion. It’s the story of outsiders brought in, the lowly lifted, and the broken made whole. Luke shows Jesus praying, eating, healing, forgiving, always bringing life where there was loss.
From the waters of Jordan to the road to Emmaus, Luke’s Jesus is the Saviour who meets us where we are and invites us into the life of the Spirit.
Symbol: Water – The Stream of Renewal
From the rivers of Eden to the Jordan, water carries the promise of new life. It cleanses, refreshes, and sustains.
In Scripture, water often marks transition, from chaos to creation, from slavery to freedom, from wilderness to promise. It reminds us that God still works through simple, earthly things to reveal God’s grace.
Bonus Symbol: Water and Spirit – The Breath of New Creation
Where the water flows, the Spirit moves. Together they show us the fullness of God’s renewing work, washing us outwardly, filling us inwardly, and sending us forward as living signs of God’s presence.
To be born of water and Spirit (John 3:5) is to live each day open to transformation, carried by the current of God’s love and empowered by God’s breath.

Prayer
Lord of Living Water,
You cleanse, refresh, and renew.
Through John, You called Your people to prepare the way;
through Christ, You opened the way;
through Your Spirit, You fill the way with life.
Wash us again, breathe Your Spirit upon us,
and send us out as bearers of Your mercy and peace.
