💬 Why Psalms?

Whenever someone says, “I don’t know where to start reading the Bible,” I always say: Start with a Gospel… or start with the Psalms.

Why?

Because in the Psalms, you’ll find every emotion — joy, sorrow, frustration, awe, despair, celebration.

You’ll find people wrestling with God, not hiding from God.

You’ll find words for the days when you can’t find your own.

This is why I love the Psalms: they show us that raw honesty is still holy.

🕯️ What the Psalms Teach Us

  • You don’t have to clean up your feelings before talking to God
  • Even Jesus quoted Psalms when he was in agony
  • Prayers can be songs, cries, whispers, protests, or poems
  • There’s a Psalm for every season of the soul

These ancient prayers remind us: you’re not the first to feel this way — and you’re not alone.

📅 What You’ll Encounter This Week about the Psalms

We’ll walk through 7 different kinds of Psalms that show the full emotional landscape of faith.

  1. Praise & Wonder – Awe at creation and our place in it
  2. Lament – Crying out in sorrow and longing
  3. Thanksgiving – Celebrating healing and joy
  4. Anger & Protest – Speaking painful truths to God
  5. Trust – Finding comfort in God’s presence
  6. Desire & Seeking – Hunger for closeness with God
  7. Worship & Commitment – Choosing to praise even when it’s hard

🔍 Highlight: Psalm 13 – A Journey in One Psalm

Psalm 13 is short, but powerful.

It begins in despair: “How long, O Lord?”

But it ends in trust: “I will sing to the Lord, because God has dealt bountifully with me.”

That’s the journey of so many psalms — and often, our journey too.

📝 A Practice for the Week

Each day, try this:

  • Read the Psalm slowly.
  • Notice what phrase stands out.
  • Write one sentence in response.
  • Let the Psalm pray with you.

Scripture is rich and layered. Each week we focus on four different ways of learning: through people, patterns, books, and symbols. These aren’t just categories — they’re ways of seeing how God moves. Whether it’s through a person’s story, a theme that repeats, a book of the Bible, or a powerful symbol, each one helps us grow in daily understanding.

Meet people whose lives teach us about God’s character and grace.

Explore key themes found throughout Scripture and your own life.

Discover the unique voice and message of each Bible book.

Unpack the images—like fire, water, bread—that reveal spiritual truths.
